What's Up?

What's been happening lately in the Davenport area?   Signs of change with beginning construction . . . . .always a good thing.

A new Walgreen's Pharmacy just opened at the corner of the Publix Plaza across the street from the Heart of Florida Hospital.   In the same complex is a new cancer center almost completed with various professional offices in the same building.   Directly across the street are signs that the long awaited Polk Community College will become a reality.   This will certainly be a boost to the local economy and most likely restaurants and other businesses will soon follow.

There are other signs of construction along Hwy 27 close to Exit 55 leading to I-4:  the former Chinese restaurant has been leveled, but plans are already underway for a commercial replacement of some sort.  Dirt is being leveled and construction has begun further south on Hwy. 27 but there is no public news yet as to what will be placed in that location.

LegoLand announced this week that they will open as scheduled in October of this year and will soon be looking to hire over 1,000 people for this new attraction in Winter Haven, formerly the home of Cypress Gardens.  Some of the "old" entertainment and gardens may remain and intermingle with the new plans.  It will be a "one-of-a-kind" theme park and will bring life back into that area of East Polk County.

At Posner Park Shopping Plaza there is some negative news that Belk Department Store will be leaving by the end of April.  Everyone is sad to see this happen, as Posner is the "anchor" to stability in retail developement for this part of the county.   It is much needed for future growth of the Davenport area.   On a positive note, a new furniture store is scheduled to open at Posner sometime this year. We all hope that with an improvement in the economy, more retailers and businesses  will see what a fabulous opportunity it is for them at this prime location.

Spring is definitely in the air and the smell of orange blossoms is only weeks away.   With the renewal of spring comes the renewed hope that we have turned the economic corner and these new signs of growth continue.
