Tidings of Comfort and Joy
December 1st, 2010 10:11 AM

This is the week that women's shoulders begin to droop as their list of holiday "should do's or to do's" becomes as long and heavy as Jacob Marley's chains!  There is gift buying, gift wrapping, gift sending, tree trimming, house decorating, card writing, card sending, cookie baking, party giving, meal preparations . . . . .have I forgotten anything?  It's no wonder women begin to drop in their tracks as we get closer to  Christmas . . . . we are the ones who "do" Christmas, performing miracles on demand.

The celebration of Christmas as we know it today, with its whirl of festivity, decorations, lavish gifts, parties, and family-centered traditions, was a creation of middle-class Victorian in both England and the United States in the mid-nineteenth century.  Victorian women, who were full-time homemakers, began "doing" Christmas in July.  However, in the last few decades, women have been doing lots of other things while we're doing Christmas.  Which is why we end up doing ourselves in every December.  For many women, this is the season of misery, tears, tantrums, screaming, yelling, hustle, bustle, cash conflicts, and plain holiday humbug!

Well, be of good cheer!  Let us slow down long enough to remember the reason for the season.  Be not frazzled, frustrated, nor frantic.   The comfort and joy comes from doing Christmas your own way.  You can consciously choose to be happy, loving, generous, peaceful, contented, calm, festive, and emotionally connected to the important peple in your life for the holidays this year.  Choose to let only what you love best about the holidays to remain on your list and cross out the rest.

Now you will have time for delighting in the sounds of bells and joyful holiday music, savoring the sweet smells of hot cider, cinnamon, or gingerbread, sipping hot chocolate and homemade eggnog, or reading a holiday story.  Re-create cherished family customs, replace perfection with peace,  and give yourself a simple Christmas full of comfort and joy!
