The Joys of June
June 13th, 2012 9:40 AM

June is a month that is generous with her gifts.  The days are sunny, hot and longer; Roses, peonies and many other flowers are in bloom; school is over, snow birds are gone, visions of vacations dance in our heads, and there is a stillness that surrounds our communities.  Business has slowed down.

We can discover this month that it is life's enrichments, rather than the riches of life, that bring us true contentment.  We can take a trip down memory lane by catching lightning bugs or fireflies and putting them in clean mayonaise jars with holes punched in the lids. Just relaxing on a cozy lanai with a frosty pitcher of lemonade, reading a good book can make life a haven.

Strawberries are in abundance, so indulge in all those desserts and treats that can be  made, including every strawberry confection imaginable!  Buy a whole watermelon and keep it in the refrigerator to get nice and cold, then take large pieces to eat out by the pool or covered porch.  Remember that ice cream is definitely good for the soul, and there is nothing better than making your own!

Hang a hammock and take time to lie in it.  Celebrate the Summer Solstice on June 21st by creating your own "camp out."  Sleep on the lanai in sleeping bags, build a "campfire" in your grill and serve hot dogs and S'mores for dessert.  Tell ghost stories and sleep in the moonlight.

Don't take one day for granted, but truly bask in the wonder of the month of June.  You will be glad you did!
