The American Dream
February 2nd, 2011 1:20 PM

As much negativity as there has been about home ownership in recent months, there are even more positive messages confirming that "the American dream" is still very much a part of the American way of life.

Home is the one place where we create an environment that is all our own.  It is where we establish traditions, raise a family, mold our family's values, and form our own identity.  Home ownership is a sure way to accumulate net worth but in a slow way much like a savings account.  Each mortage payment is like making a savings deposit, slowly building equity.  It was never meant to be a quick turnaround investment with high profits on overly inflated appraised values - that's where the market went wrong.   But we are back on track now with stable and normal home prices and appreciation rates.

Homeowners are often the glue that holds a community together.  They strengthen a community by becoming connected and committed to it and they get to know their neighbors, thereby looking after each other and each home, taking pride in the overall community.  It brings stability and consistency to a community as well as an entire region.

As quoted by an advocacy on Capitol Hill, "The people of the United States have believed for 234 years that property ownership is a core value for this country.  To say that America should no longer invest in home ownership, to say that we should stop encouraging people to own a home because the system failed them, is to forget who we are as a nation!"

We are beginning to see a turnaround in economic conditions and this is a good sign that home ownership will once again be the ambition of most Americans.  As quoted by Martha Stewart, "Our families and our homes are the center of American life.  And everything we do is to make those homes - and the lives in them - more beautiful, more comfortable, more functional, and more full of life for those we love.  At the end of the day, that is the American Dream.  All the rest is window dressing."
