Sunken Gardens
September 21st, 2011 12:50 PM

Living in Central Florida has many advantages, one of which is the ability to experience many different kinds of entertainment all in a single day trip. One of these "secret treasures" is the Sunken Gardens located in St. Petersburg.

Sunken Gardens has been a landmark in St. Petersburg since 1935 and was originally purchased by an avid gardener, who drained a shallow lake in order to provide a rich soil to grow fruits and exotic plants from all over the world.  It is actually considered a very large "sink hole."  In the 1950's, exotic wildlife was added to the growing botanical attraction.

In 1999, the gardens were purchased by the City of St. Petersburg and after years of restoration, Sunden Gardens continues to be a beautiful botanical garden right in the middle of a busy city.  Many of the original plants are still there; a well marked path leads you through many lovely photos spots, and even weddings are planned on a special lawn, surrounded by a shady oasis and lush tropical flowering plants, and cascading waterfalls.  It is a very peaceful and shady landmark, inexpensive, and does not take a lot of time to tour.

To make a full day of fun, the St. Petersburg Pier is located just a couple miles from the gardens with restaurants, shopping and entertainment, as well as dolphin cruises.  Right before the pier, there are upscale restaurants and shopping in outdoor settings that are well worth the visit.  The St. Petersburg beaches are also absolutely gorgeous with white sand and are easy to access.

There is a lot to see and do in Central Florida.   All that is really needed is a tankful of gas and a sense of adventure!
