Port Canaveral Expansion
October 23rd, 2013 11:12 AM

This week we took family to Port Canaveral for their cruise, and since we had not been to that specific port for awhile, we were pleasantly surprised to see the many positive changes taking place.

The channel leading to the port has been widened and deepened and construction is underway to add docks allowing for more cruise ships to sail from this port.  Currently, there are ships from Disney, Carnival, and Royal Caribbean cruise lines that offer a variety in length of cruises and itineraries.

There are plans to add businesses to "The Cove" area of the Port, where many nice restaurants already exist, some on the channel, as you can eat dinner and watch the cruise ships leave, waving to the lucky passengers sailing out into the sunset.  Our favorite is "Fishlips" with a varied menu of great food and plenty of indoor or outdoor seating right on the channel.

Port Canaveral is also pursuing the development on an inland port to allow barges to carry cargo to an inland distribution center.  This will allow the area to offer a transportation system with sea, air, land and space links.  It will also add more businesses and create interest in visitors spending more time at the Port.

Jetty Park is a great place to visit for a minimal fee.  There is a lovely beach, picnic areas, and lots of places to view manatees, sea turtles, and other marine wildlife.  One can sit on the beach and watch the cruise ships sail out to sea, surrounded by white sand and beach umbrellas.

Whether you are taking a cruise, dropping someone off who is, or just curious about the area, Port Canaveral is a wonderful place to spend some time and explore.
