Lakeland Liftoffs
June 29th, 2011 11:29 AM

The Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland has recently announced that they will offer commercial air service through Direct Air to four specific cities beginning this fall.  These flights will be nonstop either one way or round trip to the cities of Niagara Falls, NY, Myrtle Beach, SC, Springfield, IL, and Hagerstown, MD.   In November, Direct Air will add flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico and Plattsburgh, NY (near the ski resorts of Lake Placid, NY).

This commercial service has been a long time dream for the Lakeland Airport and the facility is currently undergoing a transformation to include a new tickets counter, checked baggage carousel, a concession stand and a screening area for the TSA.

Lakeland is poised to become a hub of tourism as people can take less expensive flights,   wait in shorter lines, and not pay to park as they go to Legoland, Disney World or Busch Gardens in Tampa.  There many families from Puerto Rico who still travel back and forth to visit relatives, and snow birds will be able to fly into the area and be closer to destinations such as Winter Haven and Davenport.

If business is successful, there is talk of a second airline that would fly to island destinations south and west of Florida.  This could be a big boost to Eastern Polk County  and bring additional local amenities that are greatly needed to the area.
