Barbara’s Blog:

Here it is, Valentine’s Day, and “love is in the air.”  Every year we take the time to celebrate by sending cards, flowers or giving candy and gifts.  We honor those we love and take time to appreciate them in special ways.  Wouldn’t it be nice if the love would carry over into the rest of the year?  Not just for those special people in our lives, but to everyone.

It doesn’t really matter what our political differences are or what opinions or beliefs we have, there should be mutual respect and acceptance for those who have a different view or different way of life.  The word “acceptance” simply means approval or to respond favorably.  It doesn’t mean we have to change our own beliefs or agree with something we don’t like.  We can “agree to disagree.”

As many friends and neighbors continue to fight against cancer and struggle with illnesses or personal challenges, we are reminded that we are only given one day at a time.  No one knows what another day will bring or what we might be facing in the future, so why waste any day on resentment, vindictiveness or selfishness?

On this day of “love” we could make a better effort at loving those who are difficult to love.  Showing respect and acceptance to those who are different from us is a great way to begin.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
