January "Blahs"
January 23rd, 2013 7:18 AM

"There is no duty we so much underrate as the duty of being happy.  By being happy we sow anonymous benefits upon the world."   Robert Louis Stevenson

Many people suffer through the January "blahs" for various reasons:  a letdown after all the excitement of the holidays; colder and drearier winter weather; the shorter days; flu season . . . . . .

We begin thinking of those New Year's resolutions, promised changes, or spring remodeling and decorating  projects that are bound to make us happy again.   But the truth is, every morning when we wake up, we've been given a wonderful gift  -  another day of life - so we need to make the most of it.  A new state of mind can bring us happiness in spite of those things beyond our control.

Of course, remodeling the kitchen, re-decorating a room, buying that new car or even taking a vacation can make us feel - at least momentarily - much happier.  But the magic seeds of contentment are planted deep within us.  Happiness that the world cannot take away only flourishes in the garden of our souls and it is important to tend to that inner garden and uproot the weeds of external expectations.

The pursuit of happiness is an inalienable right guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence.  But we have to be willing to pursue it.  Ultimately, genuine happiness can only be realized once we commit to making it a personal priority in our lives.

It isn't easy to be happy every day, especially when unexpected trials are thrown in our paths.  But like any new behavior, happiness can be learned, and having a new attitude will most assuredly take away those January "blahs."
