Hot In The City!
June 22nd, 2010 9:57 AM

Record breaking heat is what we are getting now, after record breaking cold all winter.  It certainly has been "hot in the city" the past couple weeks!  Air conditioners are being worked to capacity and electric bills are climbing once again.  But there are ways to stay cool more efficiently and economically.

Fans and ceiling fans are a great investment for the home and can make a room feel 6 to 8 degrees cooler for less than $10 per month.  Make sure to turn the fans to blow air downward (upward in the winter for heat) and on a medium speed to circulate the air faster.

Shades, drapes or blinds in a white or light color can reflect heat away from the house, especially those windows facing the sun in the morning or evening.  Keep them tightly closed at least until the sun moves away from that area.

Every home has "internal" heat gain from appliances, electronic devices, such as flat screen TV's and computers, and lighting.  Be sure to have an air conditioning thermostat in an area that will not be affected by these electronics as the system will run harder to cool.  Ceiling fans will again help to move the hot air from the room and get it circulating for more even temperatures.

Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents - they produce the same amount of light but use one fifth of the energy and heat.

Don't use the oven on extremely hot days or at the heat of the day, but if necessary be sure to use the range fan.   Use the barbeque grill instead or make some cold salad dishes to enjoy.  Better yet, take some time to eat out in a great air conditioned restaurant!

Plant trees or shrubs to shad the AC unit, as it will use less electricity than when it is in full sun all day.

We all know that heat "rises" in a home.   A well insulated attic that has a ventilation fan will help move hot air out of the attic and reduce the work time of the AC to get the home cooled down.

After the terribly cold winter we had, I said I would never again complain about the heat!   So, we have been implementing all of these ideas for our own home and plan to enjoy a wonderful HOT summer.   Stay COOL!!
