While homes are selling more quickly now, some homes still sit on the market for months without a single offer, even while priced at fair market value.  Clutter is often the contributing factor! 

Clutter is not just toys scattered across the floor, or a pile of unopened mail sitting on the counter.  Clutter is actually anything that breaks up a room.  If you look at any staged homes, you will see there is basic furniture, sparse decor and plenty of light. There is little to stop the eye from taking in the entire room.  Clutter draws attention away from the home itself and onto items that simply do not belong.  If the refrigerator is covered with family photos or drawings from children, it is not clutter to the owner, but potential buyers certainly look at it this way.

Packing clutter away is okay except that closets and the garage should not be a transfer of the clutter.   Buyers will look there too!  Consider having a garage or yard sale and give away old items no longer needed.   Then pack away all the collectibles and photos neatly and store away in another area.  The more open space shown to potential buyers, the more appealing the home will be.

Buyers cannot usually visualize their own personal items when clutter is in the way.  So make the home as neutral and open as possible before permitting it to be put on the market.  The home should then show much better and sell faster.
