Back In The Saddle

Barbara’s Blog:

I guess the word, “never” is one we should use carefully, as I have caught myself retracting it more than once.  I thought I would “never” again ride a bicycle, but just proved that one wrong, after 15 years.

Florida, with its flat terrain is a biker’s heaven, and most communities, especially senior subdivisions, have beautiful biking trails or paths, with lots of nature and beauty surrounding them. There are gorgeous bike trails in many resorts and camping areas, in addition to the national parks and even in the heat of the summer, early morning or mid-evening rides can be quite enjoyable and provide great exercise.

We recently purchased a couple of new bicycles and I thought riding might hurt the arthritis in my knee, but it is just the opposite!  Though brisk walking seems to aggravate it, the cycling does not and I feel so much better after a 15 to 30 minute bike ride.  Not everyone in the senior years can handle a two-wheel bike with several speeds; but there are many alternatives that would still give the same results.  This is a perfect way to get good exercise while enjoying the fresh air, flowers, lakes and nature that surrounds us.

So, while my husband rides his “Black Beauty” and I enjoy my “Yellow Daisy” we will be biking through our senior community “and beyond”, enjoying every moment of our surroundings and happy to be “back in the saddle” once again.
