Aging Baby Boomers

Barbara’s Blog:

We are getting older.  Without a doubt, the population of Americans 65 and older will continue to rise.  Americans in this age group will rise from 35 million people in 2000 to more than 73 million in 2030.

“Aging in place,” the trend of adapting your home as you age, is a rapidly growing business for contractors.  This topic is essential for many who desire to grow older in their current home or even want home renovation for resale potential, especially in a senior community.

The top five projects are related to safety and functionality.  These projects include adding grab bars in bathrooms or bedrooms, adding a ramp to the home’s entrance, widening doorways, or lever handles on doors.  Each of these renovations stresses the importance of functionality on a population that may have more difficulty with mobility.

Home automation has also become increasingly popular to an aging population.  Many of these features include all-in-one remote controls and smart phone apps that control temperature, light and other elements of the home.  This is a prime example of why seniors should keep up-to-date with technology and understand how smart phones can be of assistance.

Many people already making some renovations with home professionals are under the age of 65.  Even though these changes may not be actively needed now, they can still make any home more comfortable and will be there for any future needs.   It is never too early to get ready for the inevitable, as we baby boomers continue to age!
