A Victory Garden
February 23rd, 2011 9:42 AM

We decided months ago to try our hand at growing some tomatoes ourselves after being disappointed with the taste of those bought in a store.  It brought memories back of the times when most families had their own vegetable gardens and took great pride in harvesting their produce.   I remember taking tomatoes off the vine, grabbing rhubarb or cucumbers, and waiting for the corn to rippen.   Even here in Florida, a garden can be a creative pleasure.

During the great depression, home gardening took on new meaning as women had to "make do" with whatever they had.  In the 1940's President Roosevelt ordered "victory gardens" as part of the war effort.  American women answered the call by growing more than a million tons of vegetables a year in backyard plots!

The victory garden is a concept that is coming around again, not so much for necessity as for thrifty pleasure.  There is nothing better than a homegrown tomato sandwich with mayonaise and a glass of lemonade.  Consider making garden salads or stir fry with your own cucumbers, leaf spinach, sugar snap peas, or squash.

Food grown at home is not just for economy but for delight.  Gardening and cooking are both creative pasttimes and stir the imagination in directions never gone before. It is probably too late to have a complete vegetable garden for this summer, but it is never too late to begin planning one.

We have already enjoyed our first homegrown tomato sandwich and can assure that there is little as satisfying as gathering and eating the vegetables one has grown.   We have enjoyed the victory of our very own produce and hope you will, too!
